R. J. Reynolds High School Sports Hall of Fame announces 8 inductees for 2025 class

The R.J. Reynolds High School Sports Hall of Fame announces the induction of its 14th class which includes eight new members. The public is invited to the induction ceremony that will be held at halftime of the men’s basketball game between Reynolds and Glenn. The game is scheduled for Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Bryson Gymnasium. Prior to the game, there is a dinner for inductees and current members of the R.J. Reynolds Sports Hall of Fame in the RJR Auxiliary Gymnasium.  

Members of the 2025 R. J. Reynolds Sports Hall of Fame class are as follows: 

*Robert Boulware graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 2006. He was a member of the football and indoor and outdoor track and field teams. He is the second best in school history in shot put and discus and holds the indoor school record for shot put. He was the 2005 and 2006 county champion in shot put and 2006 county champion in discus. He was the 2006 State champion in discus and awarded 3rd place in shot put. After Reynolds, Boulware competed for North Carolina A&T University track and field team. 

*Philip Hightower graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1962. He was a starter at both offensive and defensive end on the football team. His senior year he played in the Shrine Bowl and the East-West All Star football game as a starter at both positions. He was voted All County, All Conference and All American. He received the YMCA Triangle Award for individuals who best exemplify the spirit of a Christian athlete. He was offered a full athletic scholarship to many ACC schools, accepting a scholarship to Davidson College where he was a two-year starter. 

*George Phillips graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1970. He was a member of the cross country and track and field teams. Phillips placed 18th at the State Meet in 1967, 13th in 1968 and 2nd in 1969. He holds the 6th best 2-mile run time in school history. In 1970 he was the 1-mile run champion in the county and came in 2nd place in the 2-mile at the State championship. Following Reynolds, Phillips ran cross country and track for Appalachian State and was named ASU’s Most Outstanding Cross Country Runner in 1970, 1971 and 1974. 

*Brian Robinson graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1990. He was captain of both the JV and varsity baseball and basketball teams. Robinson was awarded All City Basketball Athlete by the Winston-Salem Chronical in 1988 and awarded the RJR Student Athlete of the Year in 1990. Robinson received Central Piedmont AAAA All Conference in baseball in 1990.  At the time of graduation, Robinson’s .436 batting average was the 3rd highest ever at RJR.  After Reynolds, he attended Appalachian State where he played on the baseball team. He later returned to Reynolds, coaching both baseball and basketball teams. He remained in the area, coaching for Bishop McGuinness High School where he won 11 state championships. Robinson is recognized for winning several local, state and national Coach of the Year awards, holding the state record for the most consecutive state basketball titles. 

*Kenneth Shore graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1954. He was a member of both the baseball and football teams and won All Conference and All State. He was the leading scorer among city high school players and named to the All-Southern High School Football Team.  Shore was voted Most Valuable Player in the Western Conference of AAA football and played for the West Team in the All-Star Game. Shore earned a football scholarship, playing for the University of South Carolina.  

*Paris Smith graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 2003. She was a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field and basketball teams. In school history, Smith is the 5th best in 200 meters, 3rd best in 400 meters, 2nd best in 100 hurdles, 2nd best in 300 hurdles and 5th best in triple jump. She was the 2001 County Champion in 300 hurdles and came in 3rd in the 300 hurdles at the State championship that year. In 2002 she was the county champion in 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters. In 2003 she was the county champion in 100 hurdles and 400 meters.  

*Dr. Robert Sprinkle graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1950. While a student at R. J. Reynolds, Sprinkle was a member of the track and basketball teams. Dr. Sprinkle is being honored as a contributor to R. J. Reynolds athletics for his loyal service as team physician for over 20 years. In this role he not only provided medical care for student-athletes by treating injuries and managing rehabilitation, but also educated students, coaches and parents about health and safety. 

*Randy Transou graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1971. He played intramural basketball and was a member of the golf team. He had a lifelong passion for golf, becoming the men’s State champion golfer his junior year. After graduation, Transou received a golf scholarship to Wake Forest University.
